One of the most frustrating things when looking for a job is when you’re on one of the best job search siteslike Indeed, and there is nothing there of interest to you.
Refreshing LinkedIn and Indeed every day hoping for new jobs to pop up is miserable work. Even if one job pops up that you’d want, it feels like you’re entering a lottery of whether or not you’ll even get a call back.
Well, you might not realize this but there are jobs out there that aren’t listed. How do you find these jobs? Well, that’s where things can get tricky.
1. Network and Market Yourself
If you’re looking for work, networking has never been more important. Make sure that you build some solid social media profiles especially on LinkedIn.
Make connections with as many industry leaders as you can find. Ask your friends and family members to make introductions for you with some of the industry professionals in their connections.
If you build a solid LinkedIn profile and make connections, you will be more inclined to hear news about job openings before anyone else does.
2. Build Connections With Employers and Recruiters
People who are hiring or who are seeking talent for companies are going to be some of your best friends. Reach out to them and form connections with them. Down the road, they are going to be tasked with seeking out individuals to fill positions in your industry. If they already know you and know that you are capable of the job, they’ll be inclined to offer the job to you.
You can find recruiters and employers on Linkedn, and you can form connections with them through informational interviews. After having an introduction, see if you can meet with them for coffee so that you can speak with them about the industry, and struggles that you are having.
3. Market What You Can Do
There are two types of unlisted jobs: Jobs that are going to be listed soon, and jobs that companies don’t know that they need yet. In order to get that second type of unlisted job, you need to get you and your talents out in front of them.
Obviously, LinkedIn and other social media platforms are great for that. However, there are other things you can try.
You can make some YouTube videos of you demonstrating what you do for companies. You can start a blog that shows examples of your work. You can share articles on LinkedIn and other sites about the work you do and why it is valuable.
Learn how you can get yourself in front of a recruiter or employer, and then wait for the call.
